shore is a vibraphonist and composer based in brooklyn. eamon harkin and justin carter from mister saturday night met him through nyc music institution, nublu, where he worked with the legendary jazz maestro butch morris and sex mob and tom waits drummer kenny wollesen. at the very first planetarium listening session, where eamon and justin blend records into live performances for people sprawled on the floor of a loft for six hours, one of justin s friends leaned over to him and asked, -what is this record? it s amazing.- it wasn t a record. it was shore, playing a hundred times in the corner of the room.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america, and domino in europe. on mister mellow, greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples, often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs, he creates a busy, chaotic, and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic, hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity, influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends, it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records, long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual, too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm, greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow, washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years, says greene, in some ways, i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album, its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults, an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.

it’s not very widely known but, when he’s not digging for other people’s music to play out at the party, mister harkin spends a good deal of his time in the studio making some of his own. up to now, those efforts have made their way onto records for the always on point argot imprint in chicago and nyc’s own throne of blood. and although he’s djed at almost 250 mister saturday night & sunday parties since we got going in 2009, this is his debut release on the label. it’s made up of three spaciously sculpted club scorchers, ripe and ready for the power hour, and we’re super stoked to finally be able to share them with you.

alex falk first showed up on our radar back in 2013 when his terse ep dropped on tennessee-based label proper trax. that record – specifically -ptr-, which we pitched way down and turned way up – was a regular fixture on our platters, so we were stoked when the man in knoxville got in touch with these groove-heavy, stripped-back floor fillers that now make up the anjuna ep.

in search of the perfect piece of veal to create yet another variation of the schnitzel, we ve sent out a team to new york and followed up on a lead regarding taking us all the way to the vibe alleys of kingston, jamaica. the results are just as confusing as they are satisfying, since it turns out that heat, tranquillity as well as endless traffic jams are all factors accountable for a nice and tender slice of deliciousness. the island s variation of up tempo deep tissue massages, as opposed to the confusingly more laidback style of the new york method both make for a great preparation, and are now served on both sides of this schnitzel before you. as always vinyl only and limited to a number that will most likely serve most of you, but probably not all of you.

mister ho and heap are ambassadors of the river danube. this is their first offering for the esp institute. on side a, collision resistance throws us into the bowels of an underground sex lair with an adrenaline-laden heartbeat for a kick drum, a rough dose of fisting illustrated by the combination of bassline with low-tom and an unrelenting snare that whips us raw into submission. somewhere in between the waves of punishment we can start to audibly pick up tortured moans of endurance and pleasure, but maybe its time we pull our minds from the gutter, wipe the sweat from our brow and flip the record for a reward. with side b’s veils of the beloved, mister ho & heap deliver us via speedboat to the white isle, coasting along to bouncy staccato bass notes and machine bleeps as a euphoric chord progression puts us in an 808 state of mind. the percussion arrangement and phasing string flourishes are introduced through a filter, opening slowly as if coming up for air from a beautiful blue abyss. these two songs are neither too salty nor too sweat

atlus is a young man with the world on his shoulders. he holds it from misty glasgow, where he spends most of his time in the halls of rubadub. in the three songs on this epic ep, he lifts up party-melting disco house, clanging ambience and bubbling techno – and not for a second does he hint at letting the ball drop. the first of many, many records from him, we hope. this kid’s a titan.

nathan melja is the same young frenchman whose debut ep we released under the name melja late last year. since then, he moved to new york and worked at mister hq for a few months, manned the light booth at the mister saturday night and mister sunday parties (djs make the best light guys), and spent most of his time outside that making music. leo draws is the culmination of that music-making, two murky but beautiful tracks centered around vocal samples and one off-kilter number aimed at the dark corners of the dancefloor.

general ludd is rich mcmaster from new jersey and tom marshallsay from canterbury. the guys met at the glasgow art school, where rich studied environmental art and tom studied fine art. their first collaborations were interactive sound installations, but that quickly gave way to all night music making sessions. this is their second ep for us – a more left field turn than their first, but, we can assure you, both tracks will break discerning dancefloors wide open.

archie pelago is a trio from brooklyn. greg plays cello, zack plays saxophone, and dan plays trumpet and works the knobs. the archie guys did one of the very first releases on mister saturday night records, and we’re very happy to have them back – especially with such brilliant tunes. the a side, clammy customer, takes dozens of twists and turns, weaving in vocals by the always excellent gabriel garzon-montano, and the b side, madame suede nightshade, was apparently made with us in mind (check the initials). both sides are tried and tested on our dancefloor and cut at 45rpm for maximum oomph.

this is brothers and sisters, a summary of the sound of mister saturday night records to date. the album brings together all the artists who’ve released on the label – alex burkat, anthony naples, archie pelago, boya, dark sky, general ludd, gunnar haslam, hank jackson, keita sano and lumigraph – combining music made specifically for this record and tracks that have until now only been available on vinyl. (a special triple vinyl edition of all the unreleased tracks is being released in conjunction with the cd.)

boya is davin conaty, a young musician from the northwest of ireland. he grew up playing classical piano and trombone, which he left behind at the age of sixteen to play drums in a punk band. now he has moved onto machines - and somehow he has managed to extract as much feeling from them as live instruments. this is his first ep. we are proud to present it.

lumigraph is gareth smyth, a young dubliner who spent the summer of 2012 living in new york city. he filled his time recording sounds of the streets, making.

marco baileys latest attack boasts an impressive array of reworks, apart from his almost-jacking original. the mighty carlo lio goes first with commanding chords playing the lead role, while his sub bass bubbles in the background. mangled samples are interspersed with style and metallic clangs and spacious effects complete the affair.

hank jackson is from southern california, but he calls brooklyn home. a couple months ago, when we were stamping alex burkats record in the mister office, we put these songs on. after we picked our eyeballs off the floor, we realized we were listening to more than just face-burning techno. theres something about hanks music that seems to embody the conflict between youth and age, what its like to live in a society where the law can simultaneously & arbitrarily protect you or harm you. but maybe we just think too much. no matter what, we are happy to introduce hank, and we are happy to present you with the deposit ep. we hope you enjoy
